Xero – How to Delete a Bank Account

To delete a bank account in Xero, the account must not contain any transactions. If you would like to remove a bank account that contains transactions, you need to archive it instead.

How to Delete a Bank Account in Xero

To get to the right area of Xero, go to Accounting → Chart of accounts from the main menu.

Find the bank account you are looking for and tick the checkbox next to the account name. Then, click Delete to remove the bank account from Xero.

A pop-up box will appear warning you of the consequences of deleting the account. Once you are happy to completely remove the bank account from Xero, click on OK.

You should no longer see the bank account in the list of general ledger accounts on your screen. That’s all you need to do to delete a bank account from Xero.

How to Archive a Bank Account in Xero

If you cannot delete your bank account in Xero because it contains transactions, you can archive it instead.

To get to the right area of Xero, go to Accounting → Chart of accounts from the main menu.

Find the bank account you wish to archive and tick the checkbox next to its name. Then, click Archive to archive the bank account.

A pop-up box will appear with a message that lets you know the consequences of archiving the account. Once you are ready to proceed, click OK.

 Once you return to the chart of accounts screen, you should no longer see the bank account in the list of general ledger accounts. That’s all you need to do to archive a bank account in Xero.
